Alex Alguacil performs the complete version of Prokofiev's Visions Fugitives, recorded in one single take.
Visions Fugitives by Sergey Prokofiev are a fascinating set of pieces that was born out of the spontaneous compositional style of the composer, who would usually write down musical ideas as they occurred to him, to put them together later on.
In 1915 five of these pieces were born, and composed six more the year later. In 1917 he added the remaining nine, shaping a set of 20 miniatures that comprised different characters and moods when performed individually, and showed a logical sequence when performed as a whole.
On this occasion Alex Alguacil offers us the complete set. He plays all 20 miniatures in one single take, without any video editing or tricks, just as we would listen them during a live concert. This is a proof of the ability of this pianist's versatility, offering a masterful performance of this composition, rarely programmed in the concert halls. These are pieces that comprised many different musical aspects: from the most classical ones to the most grotesque ones, through the lyricism and exaggerated dynamic contrasts, showing chromatic romantic nocturnes and harmonic instability.
Alex Alguacil seems to understand the musical language of these pieces and enjoys performing them. He is fully involved as he can recreate a wide array of musical possibilities in a short period of time. Such effect reminds us of some sort of roller coaster or Siberian train that travels through different landscapes and territories, driving carefully yet firmly to arrive safely to the destination. Each piece is a miniature in itself that belongs to a whole corpus. One needs to get fully immersed in the aesthetic of each piece to rapidly switch mood to a complete opposite universe, as different and extravagant as the previous one. There in lays the contradiction of these Visions Fugitives: vital yet contemplative at the same time.
Alex will perform this season in Chicago, Tokyo and at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona, presenting recitals of spanish composers. He is currently on the piano faculty of the Conservatorio Superior de Música del Liceo de Barcelona.
